Coagualtion Meters for PT and INR Testing
Coagulometers are used to monitor patients who have to take an anticoagulant medication (e.g. Warfarin) due to a pre-existing condition (i.e. an artificial heart valve, thrombophilia or atrial fibrillation). The coagulometers can determine coagulation, the prothrombin time (PT) and the INR value in order to ascertain a patient's coagulation status and inform therapy. Some devices also allow determination of the partial thromboplastin time (PTT).
Important Parameters for Coagulation Measurement
For coagulation measurement, both the extrinsic and the intrinsic blood coagulation systems can be of importance. To control the intrinsic system, the partial thromboplastin time (PTT), also called activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), is determined as a parameter. The PTT time is prolonged in various diseases, such as inherited haemophilia. However, it can also be prolonged in cases of vitamin K deficiency or Warfarin therapy, as vitamin K-dependent clotting factors also play a role in the intrinsic system of blood coagulation.
The integrity of the extrinsic blood coagulation system is checked using a Quick test. The Quick test value can be ascertained from the quantitative determination of the prothrombin time (PT). Since the Quick value determined in different laboratories is often not comparable, the international normalised ratio (INR) has become established as an internationally comparable value for determining blood coagulation. This is a standardisation of the Quick value.
Due to the fact that mainly vitamin K-dependent clotting factors are involved in the extrinsic blood coagulation system, INR measurement is preferably performed when vitamin K antagonists (e.g. Marcumar or Falithrom) have been prescribed. The INR value can be lowered by the administration of these drugs or by other diseases (e.g. liver damage). As a high INR result or a low INR result can both lead to side effects, patients taking blood-thinning medication must be checked regularly in order to be able to adjust their medication when necessary.
INR Meters for Professional Use
At Praxisdienst we stock a wide range of portable, easy-to-use small measuring devices for determining INR values designed for point-of-care testing and patient monitoring.
The CoaguChek Pro II from Roche Diagnostics is a coagulation meter that gives particularly fast and precise measurement results. This portable coagulometer is used with test strips that are not influenced by high fibrinogen concentrations or low haematocrit values.
As a result, the CoaguChek provides especially accurate measurement results for the two test parameters PT and PTT. The data collected with the CoaguChek Pro II can also be transferred in various ways - e.g. via Ethernet, Wifi or QR code.
CoaguChek INRange: for Self-Testing
Roche's CoaguChek INRange system is ideal for home testing. It allows patients to closely monitor their own prothrombin time, once they have received training by a healthcare professional. Only one drop of blood from the fingertip is needed to perform the measurement. The device has a clear menu navigation as well as a memory for up to 400 measurement results and has the advantage that it can be used by the patient both at home and on the road without any problems. The measurement parameters determined here are PT, Quick PT and INR values.
Coagulation Meters: Test Strips and Other Accessories
In addition to coagulation meters, you will find a large selection of test strips for the various measuring devices in our online shop. For example, you can get the CoaguChek XS PT test strips for use with the CoaguChek INRange system or the CoaguChek XS PT test strips for the CoaguChek XS system - each in different pack sizes.
We also stock CoaguChek aPTT test strips for the Coaguchek II system to determine the activated partial thromboplastin time. For quality control of measurements we offer control solutions for the different CoaguChek systems. Additionally, you may also purchase a MicroINR chip for use with the MicroINR coagulation meter.
