Lancing Devices for Blood Drawing
Some rapid tests performed in medical practices and hospitals require only small amounts of capillary blood. Venous blood collection for this purpose would therefore not only be time-consuming but also uneconomical. Lancing devices and lancets (also called blood lancets or needles) are specially designed for low-pain blood collection and enable the collection of small amounts of capillary blood by puncturing the tip of the finger, earlobe, or heel in the case of newborns.
Particularly in the context of diabetes monitoring, lancing devices are ideal for quick and easy blood collection for measuring glucose in the blood. People with diabetes often use such a device to test and monitor their blood glucose levels at home or on the go. In such cases, people usually perform a finger prick to take the sample. Regular testing in this manner can help diabetics manage their diabetes symptoms.
Different Lancing Devices
In general, lancing devices either have integrated or exchangeable lancets.
With lancing devices such as the Accu-Chek Softclix from Roche only the needles are replaced. This naturally poses a higher risk of infection transmission and is therefore not suitable for use in the healthcare sector. The Accu-Chek Softclix lancets are more commonly used for self-testing, where a lancing device is only used by one person, e.g. for diabetic patients to monitor their diabetes. The advantages of these reusable lancing devices are the individually adjustable lancing depths and the avoidance of unnecessary waste.
In this category you will also find the Beurer Lancing Device and the corresponding lancets. Equipped with an AST cap, the sample can be taken not only by finger prick, but also at alternative skin sites, such as the abdomen or thighs. This is particularly suitable for patients who find blood collection from the fingertip too painful due to the many nerves and pressure receptors in the skin.
Devices with integrated lancets (often also called safety lancets or single-use lancets) are ideal for single-use in doctors' surgeries or hospitals. Safety lancets not only have automatic needle retraction, but also cannot be triggered a second time. Using safety lancets reliably excludes infection transmission when examining several patients in succession, ensuring patient safety. As the needle is safely housed in the casing before and after puncture staff safety is also ensured. Particularly popular safety lancets are, for example, the Accu-Chek Safe-T Pro Lancet from Roche or the Solofix Safety Lancets from B. Braun.
