Rapid Diagnostic Tests for Labs, Medical Practices & Hospitals
Rapid diagnostic tests allow for point-of-care-testing so that laboratory waiting times can be avoided and therapy can be started immediately when necessary. The test is typically carried out by a specialist or general practitioner in their medical practice. It can also be used in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics or other medical facilities. In most cases this involves a test cassette which is easy to use and can be carried out without much preparation.
Rapid Tests for Cardiac Biomarkers
Praxisdienst stocks a variety of rapid tests for biomarkers. One of the most important tests in this area is the Troponin Test which is generally used if a heart attack is suspected and is carried out in conjunction with an ECG.
The test is based on the detection of cardiac troponin. This is a protein complex of which the subunits troponin I and troponin T are derived exclusively from heart muscle cells and are therefore highly significant for cardiac events.
Elevated levels can be detected as early as three hours after a heart attack and reach their maximum level about 20 hours after the event. The Troponin Test can usually be performed with whole blood samples, like for example the Troponin T Test from Roche Diagnostics, where serum or plasma can also be used as a starting material.
Another important cardiac marker is CK-MB (creatine kinase myocardial band). This is an enzyme that is predominantly found in the heart muscle and elevated levels can be detected in the blood in the case of a myocardial infarction.
An increased CK-MB concentration is usually detectable from about three hours after the onset of symptoms, making the CK-MB rapid test also suitable for early detection. However, since CK-MB is not exclusively found in the heart muscle, the test is not as highly specific as the Troponin Rapid Test.
A further examination parameter that can be used in doctor's surgeries and hospitals is the c-reactive protein (CRP). This is a non-specific marker of inflammation. High to very high CRP concentrations can indicate, for example, a myocardial event or a bacterial infection. Since the CRP level rises very quickly, the CRP test can detect an inflammatory reaction at a very early stage.
The CRP Rapid Test from möLab is suitable for a particularly rapid CRP determination with results available after only five minutes. Consequently, results can be directly incorporated into the diagnosis.
Rapid Tests for Blood Grouping
Tests to determine a patient's blood type are equally important for hospitals and medical practices. These tests are used to double check a patient's blood group and the blood bank before a blood transfusion. This significantly reduces the risk of transfusion errors and increases patient safety. The Bedside Test is particularly popular in this category. It is based on the ABO system which has test fields that are already equipped with reagents to determine antigen-antibody reactions.
Our online shop stocks the Serafol AB0 Bedside-Test which determines a patient's blood type and the Sefarol AB0+D Bedside Test which determines both a patient's blood group and the rhesus factor. One drop of the patient's blood and one drop of water is sufficient to obtain a conclusive test result in 30 to 60 seconds.
Alternatively, we also stock Test Reagent which contains the corresponding antibody (anti-A, anti-B, anti-AB or anti-D). These are mixed together with the patient's blood on a spotting plate to determine the blood group via coagulation.
Rapid Diagnostic Tests for Infectious Diseases
Rapid diagnostic tests for infectious diseases are particularly popular in medical practices as they allow treatment to begin almost immediately. Rapid initiation of therapy is especially crucial in the case of viral infections, e.g. influenza, in order to reduce the course of the disease.
The Influenza Rapid Tests can easily detect a virus within 15 minutes. This is ideal for general practitioners who wish to test on the spot whether a patient has an influenza infection. Other popular rapid tests include the Streptococcus Test, the Helicobacter Pylori Rapid Test or the Malaria Rapid Test.
