Autoclaves
Autoclaves for Sterilizing Medical Products
The medical autoclave, also known as a steam sterilizer, is a gas tight sealable pressure container for the sterilization of sterile wares with saturated steam. Thermal sterilization in autoclaves is processed at temperatures between 120 and 143°C and pressure between 1 and 3 bar. In contrast to hot air sterilizers, steam sterilizers work at a lower temperature, which means they can also be used for more heat-sensitive materials, such as textiles.
Class B and Class S Autoclaves
The application of Class B autoclaves in laboratories and healthcare facilities is imperative to ensure utmost hygiene. These steam sterilizers are suitable for the safe sterilization of porous materials, culture media, wrapped and unwrapped instruments, as well as for hollow instruments. Since the fractionated vacuum process greatly minimises the air content in the sterilization chamber, even hollow instruments with narrow lumen can be safely sterilized.
Class S autoclaves, on the other hand, work with a fractionated flow procedure, or simply with pre-vacuum. Therefore, in contrast to Class B autoclaves, these steam sterilizers are only used for the sterilization of hollow instruments such as scissors or clamps, in addition to sterilizing wrapped and unwrapped instruments. In medical facilities, a Class B autoclave is preferable as soon as more complex hollow instruments, such as endoscopes, need to be sterilized.
