Retractors & Spreaders Hold the Operation Field Open
Retractors and spreaders are used to create access to and hold the surgical area open during invasive surgery. While hooks must be held actively or via a retractor system, spreaders are equipped with a locking mechanism, which holds the area open without outside assistance. Depending on the type of surgical procedure and the condition of the tissue being held open, various retractors and spreaders may be used.
Sharp & Blunt Retractors Based on Tissue Type
Retractors with sharp prongs, such as the sharp retractor from Volkmann, can be used on non-sensitive tissues. Its sharp and curved prongs provide a secure grip and the Volkamm retractor is available in various sizes (with one to six prongs).
Although these types of surgical instruments reliably hold the tissue, they could also lead to traumatisation. Therefore, blunt retractors are used for holding sensitive tissue or tissue with high blood flow.
Due to its convenient locking mechanism, the blunt Weitlaner retractor is particularly popular for use. The self-retaining retractor is quickly and safely fixed in place for hands-free operation and can be disinfected and sterilised after use. Moreover, the atraumatic Volkmann retractor with blunt prongs stands out due to its wide grip that provides a perfect hold while gently separating the sensitive tissues.
Retractors & Spreaders as Single-Use Instruments
Surgery retractors and spreaders are not only available as reusable instruments, but also as single-use instruments. They are clearly labelled as disposable instruments and reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Moreover, the surgical steel instruments are very economical as there are no additional costs for reprocessing.
In this category, you will find the Kilner surgical retractor, which combines two medical retractors in one. On one side, the double-ended instrument has a Langenbeck retractor and on the other side, there is a rake retractor. As a result, the surgical instrument is both suitable for sensitive and less sensitive tissue.
