Markers for Surgical Sites 

Sterile pens are an important instrument in surgery as they are used for marking surgical sites. Surgical skin markers are particularly popular in cosmetic surgery, amputations or the removal of skin lesions and moles. They are used on patients for pre-operative marking for optimal incision and to prevent wrong-site surgery. To avoid skin irritation, only pens containing skin-friendly, latex-free ink should be used. Most pens are equipped with a fine tip to ensure a low line width. Thick lines are unfavourable and should be avoided, especially when marking surgical cuts. Markers with a fine tip are much better suited for this procedure. Typical ink colours for marking the skin are black, red, violet and blue, as these colours form a particularly strong contrast to the skin and are therefore very visible. 

Surgical site markers are often supplied with a ruler or a tape measure to measure the size of the operating field before surgery. Instead of drawing freehand, rulers can be used during marking and allow for better documentation.

Plaster casts, bandages and zinc paste bandages are generally applied this way.

In nuclear medicine, surgical skin markers are used for marking the X-ray region. After the examination, the ink can easily be removed with an alcohol swab.
