Similar to humans, even dogs, cats, horses and other mammals can be diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The veterinary glucometer plays an important role in monitoring and treating this metabolism disease. The pet owners are necessary for treatment since the animals not only require regular blood sugar monitoring with an animal glucometer, but also because they must often be injected with insulin. 

Diabetes in dogs

With dogs, diabetes typically appears in the second half of their lives; type 1 diabetes is most widely spread amongst dogs. When it comes to dogs with type 1 diabetes, the pancreas no longer produces enough insulin to transfer the blood sugar from the blood and into the cells.

The blood sugar level increases and remains at a high level. The causes for type 1 diabetes in dogs include genetic predispositions, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. 

With type 2 diabetes, the dog produces enough insulin, but the hormone does not function properly. The causes are suspected to be obesity and hormone imbalances.

Diabetes in cats

Just as with a dog, diabetes in cats is recognisable by increased thirst and excessive urination. Later, the animal gets a ravenous appetite while simultaneously losing weight.

The cornerstone of diabetes treatment is the controlling and monitoring of the blood sugar level with a veterinary glucometer. Insulin therapy is based on the blood sugar level. The better the blood sugar level is, the higher the quality of life and, thus, the lower the risk for resulting ailments. Because dogs and cats respond poorly to oral diabetes treatment, insulin injections must be administered from day one.

Contrary to the earlier opinion that blood sugar monitors from human medicine can also be used for measuring blood sugar in animals, more and more veterinary glucometers are being applied in veterinary medicine. This is sensible, as the calibration of the human and veterinary glucometers greatly differs.

The differing calibration of the meters is due to the fact that human and animal blood greatly differs. Not only does the haematocrit value and the red blood cell count differ, but the sizes of the red blood cells also differ.

This causes variation in the glucose proportion that is present in blood plasma and in the red blood cells, respectively.

The animal glucometer takes this condition into account and delivers exact measurement results for dogs, cats and horses.
