Gauze and Conforming Bandages for Protective, Pressure and Medicated Wraps
The use of gauze and conforming bandages on an animal conforms to the required type of treatment and covers a wide range of applications. Gauze bandages and conforming bandages are available with various specifications, such as open, with a cut edge, elastic and non-elastic, made of cotton or cellulose, even polyamid or viscous. They find diverse application in veterinary medicine and are individually selected based on the requirements.
Gauze Bandages for Animal Wraps
The gauze bandage is the ideal dressing material to correctly secure wound covers or for applying ointment or pressure wraps on the animal. When using elastic bandages that are not being used for a pressure bandage, one should be sure to not pull too tightly in order to prevent pressure points. Elastic gauze bandages are excellent for applying wraps on joints, as they least impair freedom of movement as compared to non-elastic dressing materials. They adjust to the bodily characteristics and, thanks to their breathable properties, provide sufficient air permeability. Cohesive bandages for securing wraps have the advantage of being self-adhesive and, unlike common gauze bandages, do not need to be resecured.
Protective Wraps for Animals
Protective wraps are applied to protect abrasions, lacerations or surgical wounds. This promotes the healing process in the wound, as inflammation resulting from pathogens can be prevented. Animals that often gnaw on wraps must also wear a neck cone (Elizabethan collar) so that they do not destroy the dressing materials. A paw wrap is considered one of the protective wraps used in veterinary medicine.
Pressure Wraps in Veterinary Medicine
Pressure wraps are used for vascular compression with heavily bleeding injuries. In this case, a sterile wound cover is absolutely necessary in order to prevent inflammation of the injured tissue. Moreover, a thick layer of dressing gauze is tightly wrapped in elastic gauze. After a single day, at the latest, the wrap must be removed to alleviate the highly compressive affect and no longer impact blood circulation.
In order to prevent medications in the form of ointments and tinctures from being licked off by the animal and to ensure a lasting affect, the use of a medicated wrap is implored. This also prevents the home environment from becoming dirtied by the ointment residue. This style of wrap is applied, for example, for inflammatory swelling of the extremeites. Another effective type of medicated wrap is a soaker boot. For this, dressing padding is soaked in a solution like Rivanol, for example. Then, this gauze bandage is secured to the animal's effected limb. Soaking the bandage can be repeated as often as necessary, by pouring the solution inside the wrap.
