Suture Materials for Surgical Wound Closure in Veterinary Medicine
Suture materials for veterinary medicine are used to close surgical wounds or for injuries that require surgical treatment due to their manifestation and size. Different suture and needles are required depending on the tissue structure.
With this in mind, the surgeon will choose between absorbable and non-absorbable suture materials as well as a suitable surgical needle. In this category we offer an extensive selection of high-quality suture materials for veterinary medicine.
Absorbable Suture Materials
Absorbable sutures are used for suturing internal organs, muscle layers, vessels, subcutaneous fatty tissue or other tissue layers that cannot be reached for suture removal.
Absorbable suture is degraded by hydrolysis and absorbed and metabolized by the body. Depending on the individual resorption and dissolution time, no further treatment is required unless complications arise. The Catgut Chrome Needle Thread Combination, on the other hand, is degraded by the body's own proteolytic enzymes. It can be used in a variety of ways for general surgery, soft tissue closing and ligation.
The veterinary suture material Petcryl® PGA is an absorbable, braided multifilament including 3/8 cutting needle. The coating ensures a smooth passage through tissue and minimal tissue reaction. The suture material is extremely flexible and has high tensile strength and optimal hold.
Non-Absorbable Suture Materials
Non-absorbable sutures are used in veterinary medicine not only for suturing skin wounds which are easily accessible, but also for securing venous catheters.
This has the advantage that the animals are not able, or only with difficulty, to remove the vein access themselves by gnawing or rubbing. The ideal suture should allow the healing tissue to recover sufficiently to keep the wound closed together once they are removed. The timing of suture removal depends on the manifestation and size of the wound as well as the individual stage of the healing process.
SMI Polyester Suture, for example, is a non-absorbable, braided multifilament that can be used in cardiovascular surgery, general surgery and orthopaedics, among others. Absorbable and non-absorbable suture can be purchased both individually sterile shrink-wrapped or on a spool.
