The monofilament steel wire by SMI is a very hard-wearing, non-absorbable suture for veterinary medicine. It is made from an iron-nickel-chromium alloy that is very resistant, yet flexible and malleable. Steel wire is a suture with a very smooth surface that enables it to slide easily through the stitched tissue and causes a minimal sawing effect. Steel does not have capillary action, so bacterial growth in the suture is prevented.
Thanks to its excellent malleability, flexibility and tensile strength, even with a very narrow diameter, monofilament steel wire is especially used as a suture in areas of high demand, such as orthopaedics.
