Wounds are part of the daily life in a veterinary clinic and are most often the result of accidents are fights–although certain skin diseases can cause wounds e.g. when a cat propagates the issue by scratching an itchy spot. Treatment with a suitable wound disinfectant prevents the wound from becoming infected and thus, promotes the healing process.

Promote the healing process

Proper wound treatment is dependent upon the type and cause of the wound. As a rule, the fur surrounding the wound is first removed; this allows for a more accurate analysis of the injury, while also preventing individual hairs from falling into the wound and hindering its ability to heal.

The second step is to remove any foreign bodies which may be present in the wound. Whether leaves, dirt, thorns or even saliva, foreign bodies contaminate the wound and, in the worst case scenario, can lead to infection.

Therefore, the wound should be additionally rinsed out with a disinfectant solution after removal of the larger foreign bodies. Wound disinfection is often carried out via a wound spray where the wound disinfectant is administered into the wound and surrounding tissue through a spray cap. However, this can also be done manually where one uses a sterile, non-linting compress soaked with wound disinfectant and carefully dabs the wound.

The dressing applied after treating the wound can also have a wound gel on it, which promotes healing in that it moistens the wound; thus creating an optimal wound milieu. In the best case scenario, this will also shorten the necessary treatment time. Wound disinfection not only plays a role in wounds that result from accidents or bites, but also in surgical wounds e.g. following castrations, which should also be thoroughly disinfected. Otherwise, a wound disinfection could also occur.
