Sharps containers prevent needlestick injuries

Sharps containers, also known as sharps bins, are made of non-penetrable plastic and are equipped with a special closure that cannot be reopened once closed. Used cannulas, scalpels, lancets and single-use instruments are disposed of into a sharps container directly after they have been used. A sharps container can be filled to the marking and then irreversibly closed. Because sharps containers do not reopen after being closed and because they are made of non-penetrable material, they equally protect the veterinary personnel and sanitation employees from needlestick injuries.

Sharps containers with different capacities

Depending on where the sharps container is to be used and which items will be most often disposed into it, a sharps container is available with different capacities.

Small sharps containers with volumes from 200 – 300 ml most often come into use for filling doctor's bags and emergency bags, as they take up only a small amount of space and are great for disposing of classic cannulas.

The standard sharps containers for veterinary clinics usually have a volume between 600 ml and 5 litres. For disposing of single-use instruments, there are special sharps containers with a stripping aid for disposing of instruments.

For facilities with a particularly high use of cannulas, syringes and other pointed and sharp consumables, there are XXL disposal boxes (such as the Sharpsafe cannula disposal container from Dahlhausen - it enables the safe disposal of hospital waste), available with volumes of 30 litres or more.

Sharps containers in emergency colours

In order to ensure that the sharps container is well visible, they are traditionally produced in emergency colours like yellow and red. The container is usually mostly yellow with a strong red colour.
