Bloodletting

Bloodletting is a healing technique used for humans and animals since antiquity. In bloodletting, a larger quantity of blood than is usual for blood collection is removed via special hypodermic needles. However, the important thing is not the blood that has been removed, but the blood missing from the body. The consequence is a reduced volume of blood, less iron and, according to Hildegard von Bingen, also less free poison in the bloodstream.

Bloodletting in animals is still used today to relieve illnesses: when a horse has very painful laminitis, bloodletting reduces the pressure in the hoof and thins the blood. Up to 5 litres of blood can be removed from a horse!

For bloodletting, vets require large-lumen hypodermic needles, known as Strauss needles, as well as optional vacuum bottles, blood collection devices and a bloodletting tourniquet. In this category, Praxisdienst-VET provides all the utensils required for bloodletting. Buy these products at affordable prices online - in the Praxisdienst-VET online shop!
