Giardia Test

The Giardia test from nal von minden is used for the early detection of specific antigens of Giardia in faecal samples from dogs and cats.In addition to Giardia lamblia, it also covers Giardia intestinalis and duodenalis. The test result is available after only 10 minutes. If possible, the Giardia rapid test can also be carried out with a pooled faecal sample.

The scope of delivery includes 5 pieces of the Giardia rapid tests.

Test Performance

• Bring the sample material and the components of the test to room temperature.
• Remove the test cassette from the aluminium package and place it on a horizontal surface.
• Put the swab with the sample in the sample tube and mix the solution.
• Remove the swab, close the tube and shake it.
• Break the tip of the tube off and dispense three drops of the solution into the sample well. Start the timer.
• The results can be read after ten minutes (not later).

Giardia in Dogs and Cats

The microscopic and globally spread small intestine parasites belong to the protozoa. Giardia duodenalis is particularly common in dogs and cats - especially in younger animals. The infection us caused by the oral ingestion of cysts in drinking water, feed or the faeces of infected animals. A common symptom of Giardia is therapy-resistant diarrhoea, as well as emaciation and a dull coat. However, inapparent infections are possible as well.

If an infestation has been detected by the rapid test, the animal can immediately be treated e.g. with Fenbendazole. In addition, general hygiene measures and, if necessary, a repetition of the medication are recommended.
