Nail Trimmers: for dogs, cats, birds & rodents
Many pets are unable to wear down their claws naturally due to the conditions under which they are kept, so that claw care by pet owners, vets or professional groomers, becomes necessary. Guinea pigs, for example, often need to have their claws shortened with the help of a trimmer, e.g., nail scissors or nail clippers. The animals are usually kept on bedding and their constantly growing claws do not automatically wear down and shorten on the soft substrate, as they would in their natural habitat. Claw grooming is thus very important for such animals.
In cats, claw trimming is not always a necessary element of grooming. Using some form of trimmer to shorten cat claws, e.g., cat nail clippers, nail scissors or nail grinders, is only necessary if a cat is no longer able to shorten their claws themselves by sharpening on trees, scratching furniture or the like, due to illness or old age.
In dogs however, claw trimming can be an important part of regular dog grooming. Dogs' claws must always be trimmed, if walks take place on surfaces that are too soft or if the walks are simply too short. If the claws are the right length, they hardly touch the ground, or not at all. Dog owners usually notices whether they need to be trimmed when the dog makes clicking noises on parquet or tiled floors. It is advised to shorten their claws with suitable dog nail clippers or scissors.
What happens if claws get too long?
The following applies to all animals: if claws become too long, it can lead to malpositioning of the paws and thus to painful paws, and in the worst case they can even grow in and cause bleeding and infections of the paw. To prevent this, they should be checked regularly. When trimming claws, it is generally important to keep a sufficient distance from the quick, which can be recognised by its pink colour. Nerves and blood vessels run in this area and a distance of 2-3 mm should be kept regardless of whether you are using scissors or clippers.
Whether you need to use nail scissors or nail clippers depends on the size and condition of the claws. You may purchase both scissors for small animals (for example guinea pigs or hamsters) and nail clippers that are suitable for claw care in medium-sized and large animals (for example large and small dogs or cats).
A cut length limiter is useful to prevent accidental over-cutting. This can be especially helpful for animals with dark claws.
Nail Grinders: for particularly gentle claw care
In addition to nail clippers and nail scissors made of stainless steel, a popular tool with professional groomers and pet owners alike, are nail grinders. Nail grinders can be used to file down dog and cat claws instead of clipping them off. This slow approach to the optimal claw length reduces the risk of injury to the blood vessels and nerves that run in the claw.
