Castration & Mating Prevention
Castration of Small and Large Animals
The routine tasks of veterinarians include the castration of various animal species. Castrations of both male and female animals are performed in large and small animal clinics to control the animal population and prevent undesirable behaviour like urine marking in cats.
Castration of Farm Animals
When castrating cattle, sheep or other livestock, the veterinarian can choose between the bloody and bloodless castration method. The latter is the most common castration method, as neither disinfection nor anaesthesia is necessary.
With the Burdizzo castration forceps, the animal’s spermatic cords are clamped off for about one minute at a time. To guarantee a successful castration, it is recommended to clamp off each cord at two different spots. In addition to a good securement of the animal, sedation or, in older animals, sacral epidural anaesthesia is sufficient for performing the castration.
Castration of Female Cats
Castrations of male and female cats are among the most common surgical procedures in veterinary practices and clinics. Apart from population control, there are numerous reasons for castration; a higher life expectancy, no symptoms of being in heat and a lower risk of accidents due to a reduced need to stray.
This makes it all the more important to equip every veterinary operating theatre with high-quality instruments and materials. An indispensable tool for ovarotomy in cats is the ovarotomy hook. With its help, the uterus horns are gently pulled out of the abdominal cavity to place the appropriate ligature. Its rounded shape also allows the instrument to be used for pulling back the soft palate without the risk of injury if a foreign body is suspected.
