The farrier requires a multitude of tools from high-quality materials like stainless steel to carry out his activities. These instruments, which are called farrier tools, are applied for shaping and shoeing hooves.
The job of a farrier is to shorten and correct hooved animals, shape hooves (digging out and trimming the frog) in preparation for shoeing, shoe the hoof with a horseshoe, provide therapeutic treatment for horses with posture problems or hoof diseases (e.g. using special horseshoes), as well as adapting horseshoes and providing dental care to horses. Various farrier tools are required for all of these activities - from hoof files to hoof nail clinches.
The individual steps of horseshoeing
- The old horseshoe and the nails are removed. Then, the hoof is either pinched into shape or trimmed with a hoof knife before smoothing out unevenness with a hoof file.
- The new horseshoe is adapted using a hammer and anvil before using hoof nails and a hoof hammer to nail the shoe along the white line on the prepared hoof. Horseshoeing can either be done with a hot or cold horseshoe. The advantage to hot shoeing is that smaller areas of unevenness can be balanced with the hot horseshoe and the farrier clearly recognises whether the recesses for the nails lie on the white line or not.
- Because the hoof nails stick out of the hoof wall, they need to be shortened and sinked into the hoof horn. To do so, clamps, a gouge and a hoof nail clinch are required. The nails are shortened with the clamps, the gouge creates mould-shaped indentions and the hoof nail clinch sinks the nail stumps into these recessions.
