Cage Magnets
Magnets for cows
Due to the particular feeding behaviour of cattle, foreign bodies in the feed are often and easily ingested. Generally, they consist of metallic objects like nails, wire pieces, parts of tin cans, ballpoint pens or even needles. These foreign bodies can penetrate the forestomach wall and cause injuries, infections or inflammations.
To avoid a surgical removal of the foreign bodies or a diagnostic laparotomy, ruminal magnets can instead be used for conservative therapy.
The cow magnets can either be used as a preventive measure, as foreign bodies are secured immediately after swallowing to prevent perforation, or as a treatment after detection. This can prevent further penetration, thus limiting damages.
In order to avoid surgical removal of the foreign body or a diagnostic laparotomy, in such cases a conservative therapy is first initiated using cage magnets such as the Cage Magnet Green from Kerbl.
This is usually applied prophylactically to the cow's stomach and fixed in place. There it attracts the metal immediately after swallowing, absorbs it and thus avoids perforation of the stomach wall.
Operating principle of the cow magnets
The standard ruminant magnet is ten centimetres long and has a 35mm diameter. This makes it ideal for use with bolus and ruminal magnet introducers. The actual magnets are surrounded by a plastic cage, to not only attract the foreign bodies, but also safely contain them.
In addition to the classic “Ruminal Magnet green”, we also offer models with particularly strong magnetic force. The “Ruminal Magnet forte”, for example is particularly suitable for treating fresh foreign bodies. Thanks to the active ferrite magnet system, the magnet is even able to remove foreign bodies that have already pierced the stomach wall of the cow. Its patented design with extra large interior and magnets that are attached to its exterior, the ruminal magnet is especially effective. While the cow magnet rotates, the foreign bodies are trapped in its interior, where they do not pose a threat anymore.
Quick and safe application
The special introducers with an inner diameter of 36mm are used to apply ruminal magnets as well as boli. The qualitative stainless steel introducer with rounded edges offers a particularly high level of safety and stability. Thanks to its one-handed mechanism to secure and apply the magnets, the introducer is especially handy.
