The loop of the twitch is placed over the horse's upper lip and twisted around itself using the wooden handle. By squeezing the upper lip, the horse is temporarily immobilised. The twitch is used on horses that react problematically to veterinary examinations or farriers.

The twitch is used to immobilise uncooperative horses. The fabric loop is placed over the horse's upper lip. The wooden handle is twisted around itself until the sensitive upper lip is clamped and the horse is outwardly calm.
If the twitch is used very selectively, carefully and in a controlled manner, the animal doesn't feel any great pain. If you are dealing with a painful treatment or examination, the veterinarian will consider sedation or anaesthesia instead of the twitch.
The twitch can be used on restless, frantic or unwilling animals. The use on panicked or extremely anxious animals should, however, be reconsidered.
