Sensitivity
The test’s sensitivity indicates the percentage of people who are infected with the virus and for whom the test shows a positive result. At a sensitivity of 95%, 95 of 100 patients are tested positive, while 5 patients receive a false-negative result. The higher the sensitivity, the more reliably a test will indicate a positive result if a patient is infected.
Specificity
A test’s specificity indicates the probability that a healthy patient will be recognised as such. The higher the specificity, the lower the risk of a false-positive result.
Ct-Value
The Ct-value determined during the PCR examination is used to measure the amount of RNA present in the sample. The higher the Ct-value, the lower the virus concentration in the tested sample. In SARS-CoV-2 PCR, Ct-values > 35 indicate a very low virus concentration in the sample.
COVID-19 Rapid Tests for Nursing Homes
Residents of nursing homes and retirement homes are at increased risk of contracting an infectious disease, such as COVID-19, due to their age or a pre-existing illness, and of suffering a severe case in the event of an infection. Regular corona antigen testing of visitors and contact persons of infected patients and nursing staff is necessary in order to detect possible infections at an early stage and to break the chain of infection.
These corona antigen tests can be performed directly on site (POC) and provide rapid results (within 15 minutes). Many antigen tests can be performed with sample material from the anterior nasal region. This gentle test procedure is particularly suitable for senior citizens, persons in need of care or people with disabilities.
COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests
COVID-19 antigen tests are used to detect acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. The rapid test responds to the presence of viral SARS-CoV-2 nucleoproteins and is performed with naso- and/or oropharyngeal swabs. In contrast to PCR tests, results of antigen test are available within a few minutes, so that appropriate measures can be initiated without delay. COVID-19 antigen tests are particularly well suited for testing contacts suspected of being infected with SARS-CoV-2. The point-of-care rapid test can be carried out not only in doctors' surgeries but also, for example, in hospitals, nursing homes, pharmacies, schools, companies or test centres.
Please refer to the package insert of the COVID-19 antigen test - depending on the authorisation, the various tests are either suitable to be performed by healthcare professionals, by appropriately trained staff or for self-administration.
