The COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test
The COVID-19 antigen test is used to detect acute SARS-CoV-2 infections. The test is based on the detection of viral nucleoprotein antigens for SARS-CoV-2 in oropharyngeal or nasopharyngeal swabs. They stand out due to their particularly fast results that allow for quicker screening. As a result, the tests are ideal for testing people who came into contact with the virus. The point-of-care tests can be used on site in the medical practice as well as in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
Please note that the antigen rapid tests are only intended for use by medical professionals.
The test’s sensitivity indicates the percentage of people who are infected with the virus and for whom the test shows a positive result. At a sensitivity of 95%, 95 of 100 patients are tested positive, while 5 patients receive a false-negative result. The higher the sensitivity, the more reliably a test will indicate a positive result if a patient is infected.
A test’s specificity indicates the probability that a healthy patient will be recognised as such. The higher the specificity, the lower the risk of a false-positive result.
The Ct-value determined during the PCR examination is used to measure the amount of RNA present in the sample. The higher the Ct-value, the lower the virus concentration in the tested sample. In SARS-CoV-2 PCR, Ct-values > 35 indicate a very low virus concentration in the sample.
