Ophthalmoscopy in Animals
At the beginning of an eye examination, the veterinarian first inspects the patient’s eye externally. The conjunctiva, cornea, and retina are examined thoroughly, along with the eyelids and movement of the eyeballs.
Eye examinations are usually performed due to symptoms such as swelling, redness, or excessive tearing. Any pathological changes should always be taken seriously and examined as quickly as possible by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Eye diseases and inflammations can progress rapidly and may become chronic, potentially leading to loss of vision or even loss of the eye.
This external eye examination is called indirect ophthalmoscopy. For improved visualisation, an ophthalmoscope lens can be used to enlarge the fundus image. The Welch Allyn ophthalmoscope lens features a convex design that reduces image distortion and supports examination even in anxious or uncooperative patients.
Eye Examination Using an Ophthalmoscope
The Welch Allyn Elite Coax-Plus Optics Ophthalmoscope features 68 lenses and six apertures. Its Coax-Plus optical system provides a particularly wide field of view, while the HPX halogen lamp ensures realistic colour rendering of internal ocular structures. The cataract (opacity) filter ensures optimal visualisation of the eye even in the presence of opacities or other visual obstructions.
Also available is the iExaminer system for the PanOptic ophthalmoscope. With the iPhone adapter, a connection between smartphone and ophthalmoscope becomes possible, allowing fundus images obtained during ophthalmoscopy to be quickly and easily saved on the smartphone.
