Ultrasound in dogs, cats, horses, cattle and sheep
Ultrasound examination for visualising the organs
In veterinary medicine, ultrasound is most commonly used to visualise the internal organs. The heart, kidneys and intestines, for example, can be examined very effectively using ultrasound waves. As the ultrasound probe must be placed directly on the skin, removing the fur from the area to be examined is essential prior to sonography. This can be done using clippers or a razor, depending on which organs or tissues need to be assessed.
Important for ultrasound examinations at the veterinary clinic: choosing the right probe
Depending on which structures are to be examined using ultrasound, different ultrasound probes are used in veterinary medicine. The probe – also referred to as the transducer – transmits the ultrasound waves onto the body of the large or small animal.
Ultrasound for pregnancy monitoring
Ultrasound devices are not only used to examine diseases in dogs and cats – they are also employed for pregnancy detection. In dogs, sonography can usually confirm pregnancy from around day 25, and in cats from around day 20. The exact number of puppies often cannot be reliably determined using ultrasound, especially when there are more than four. The pregnancy detection device for sheep and goats enables an exceptionally simple method of pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring – even in alpacas!
This method of pregnancy examination is used primarily in cattle, horses and sheep. The rectal probe for large animals, Youkey Vet Convex Endo, is used in combination with the Youkey Wireless Flex Vet ultrasound system. This probe is suitable, for example, for pregnancy examinations in horses and cows.
