Folded paper towels are usually available in white, natural, or green. The colour has no functional significance and should not be interpreted as a colour-coding system; it is simply a matter of personal preference. In addition, paper towels are typically available in either single-ply or two-ply.

Folds and Folding Explained

The offer of disposable paper hand towels is large and can be very confusing. The terms "folding" and "fold" are sometimes mixed up or used incorrectly, resulting in incorrect product choices.

The term fold refers to how a single sheet is folded. There are several common fold types:

C-fold: The towel is folded in the middle so that it lies double, then both sides are folded inward again, forming a “C” shape.
V-fold: The towel is folded in the middle to form a “V” shape.

Z-fold: The paper towel is folded twice to form a “Z” shape.

W-fold: The disposable towel is folded three times to form a “W”. These towels are often connected via perforations, unlike other crease types where each towel lies separately.

The folding describes how the individual disposable towels are stacked or bundled. There are two main types: layered folding and zig-zag folding. In layered folding, the folded sheets are simply stacked on top of each other, which is suitable when the towels are used loosely and not in a dispenser. Zig-zag folding is ideal for use in paper towel dispensers, as the towels are interleaved so that when one towel is pulled out, the next one is partially dispensed without being touched, ensuring a clean, hygienic towel is always available for the next user.

Paper Towel Rolls as an Alternative to Folded Towels

The hand towel roll is a cost-effective alternative to classic folded paper towels. This is especially useful when a towel dispenser is incorrectly refilled or the quality of disposable towels is low, which can result in more towels being pulled out than actually needed. This issue does not occur with towel rolls.

Hand towel rolls are available in various designs for different dispensers. Essentially, there are rolls for manual dispensers and towel rolls for sensor-operated dispensers. In a manual roll dispenser, the sheet is torn off by hand along a perforated edge, while in a sensor dispenser, a fresh sheet is dispensed in a predetermined length when the user places their hand near the sensor.
