Surgical Gloves Protect the Operating Team and Patients
Surgical gloves are sterile disposable gloves for use in the operating theatre, designed for performing surgical procedures in hospitals or medical clinics. These medical gloves not only protect patients from infections but also prevent the surgeon from coming into direct contact with blood and other potentially infectious bodily fluids.
Depending on their design, surgical gloves are classified either as part of hygienic clothing or personal protective equipment, and are therefore subject to different standards. Surgical gloves are considered medical devices and must comply not only with the Medical Devices Directive but also with EN 455 standards. EN 455 is divided into four parts, covering not only the glove’s integrity but also its physical properties, biocompatibility, and durability. Both unsterile examination gloves and sterile surgical gloves are required to meet a minimum AQL of 1.5 according to EN 455.
Essential: Excellent Tactile Sensitivity & Comfort
For surgical procedures, gloves must provide precise tactile feedback and a comfortable fit to ensure safety and efficiency in the operating theatre. High-quality surgical gloves support dexterity, reduce hand fatigue, and allow medical professionals to perform procedures with maximum precision.
Double Gloving with Surgical Gloves
In the operating theatre, double gloving—wearing two pairs of gloves simultaneously—is often practiced. This technique protects the surgical team, particularly during procedures where the outer gloves may wear out quickly due to mechanical stress or when operating on patients with infectious diseases such as HIV. If the outer glove is damaged, the inner glove still provides protection, and the outer glove can be replaced. To ensure easy donning of both gloves, they typically feature a special inner coating, such as copolymer.
