Face Masks & Respirators in the Fight Against COVID-19

Since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 and its global spread, wearing masks has become one of the most important measures in the fight against the virus. Different types of masks provide varying levels of protection. In the medical field, a distinction is generally made between the classic surgical masks (medical face masks) and particle-filtering respirators (FFP masks). Surgical Masks

Standard medical face masks are typically three-layered for effective protection, made from specialised non-woven materials, and can be secured with either ear loops or tie straps. They are designed for use during examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures to protect both healthcare professionals and patients. These masks capture droplets from exhaled air while also preventing contact with splashes of bodily fluids.

In the European Union, disposable medical face masks must not only carry a CE marking but also comply with EN 14683 standards. They are classified as Type I, with a bacterial filtration efficiency (BFE) of at least 95%, or Type II, with a BFE of at least 98%. Surgical masks that are also liquid-resistant are classified as Type IIR if they can withstand a splash pressure of at least 16 kPa.

These masks for mouth and nose protection are available not only in traditional medical colours such as blue, green, or white, but also in a variety of other colours, including black and pink. Typically, non-sterile masks are supplied in boxes of 50 pieces.

FFP Respirator Masks

FFP masks are respiratory protective masks that cover both the nose and mouth, providing a much better seal than standard medical face masks. Typically made from non-woven fabric, FFP masks protect against inhalation of particles, as well as water- or oil-based aerosols. Most models include an adjustable nose clip to ensure a snug fit, preventing gaps around the nose. Higher-end models often feature an additional sealing lip along the sides and chin to further reduce unfiltered air entry. The masks are secured to the head with elastic straps.

FFP masks are classified into three protection levels:

FFP1 masks – maximum total leakage of 25%. They filter non-toxic, non-fibrogenic dusts up to four times the maximum workplace concentration.
FFP2 masks – provide at least 95% filtration efficiency. These masks can filter solid and liquid particles, harmful dusts, and other hazardous substances up to ten times the maximum workplace concentration.
FFP3 masks – offer the highest protection, with a minimum filtration efficiency of 99%. They filter toxic substances, droplet aerosols, bacteria, viruses, and even radioactive particles, suitable for use up to thirty times the maximum workplace concentration.

When using a particle-filtering respirator with a focus on protecting the environment, it is advisable to choose a mask without a valve. While a valve makes breathing easier, it releases exhaled air unfiltered into the surroundings.
