Infusion and Injection Accessories

Whether for an infusion or an injection, the parenteral administration of medication offers numerous advantages and is therefore performed thousands of times each day on patients worldwide. This method not only relieves the patient’s gastrointestinal tract but also ensures that the medication (for example, via infusion) reaches the bloodstream faster, allowing for quicker and more targeted effects.

Injections and infusions are always carried out using sterile single-use products (such as syringes and needles) to prevent infection transmission. In this category, you will find a comprehensive range of accessories for procedures on patients – from injections, punctures, and infusions to blood collection – available in various types and sizes.

Injection Explained

Definition of Injection: In medicine, an injection refers to the parenteral administration of dissolved or suspended medicinal substances into the body. In most cases, an injection is performed using a syringe fitted with a needle. Injection preparations are sterile solutions, emulsions, or suspensions produced by dissolving, emulsifying, or suspending the active substances and excipients in water or a suitable non-aqueous liquid (such as fatty oils). Administration is parenteral – directly via syringe and single-use needle.

Because the drug is applied directly, the dose quickly enters the bloodstream, leading to faster pharmacological effects than with oral administration. This is especially important in medical emergencies. Injections can also be administered to unconscious patients. Some injection formulations offer a depot effect. Unlike infusions, injections generally involve small volumes – typically less than 1 ml up to several millilitres.

An injection provides a rapid therapeutic effect when required, as the active ingredient enters the bloodstream immediately. Injections are commonly given intravenously, subcutaneously, or intramuscularly and are suitable for drugs that cannot be taken orally. Isotonicity is less crucial for small-volume injections than for infusions. Praxisdienst offers a wide range of disposable syringes, fine-dosage syringes, and related accessories – all at excellent prices.

Infusion Explained

Definition of Infusion: To infuse means to introduce a controlled amount of liquid into the body. The term derives from the Latin *infundere* – “to pour in.” The key aspect of a medical infusion is that it is precisely calculated and carefully administered. The term “infusion” generally refers to the administration of larger fluid volumes into the body, usually intravenously into the bloodstream, but sometimes also directly into organs or tissues. In contrast, injections involve smaller volumes.

Pharmaceutical infusion solutions must meet strict standards: they must be sterile, pyrogen-free, particle-free, and isotonic with blood. Common applications include correcting fluid and electrolyte imbalances, parenteral nutrition, volume replacement, and the administration of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Infusion solutions must not contain preservatives. At Praxisdienst, you’ll find a wide range of products for infusion and transfusion therapy.

Parenteral administration offers several advantages over oral delivery. The effect occurs faster and more controllably, as both the active substances and fluids enter the bloodstream directly, bypassing the digestive tract and liver. This makes it suitable even for unconscious or weakened patients.

Injection Sites and Techniques

Medications can be administered at various sites and through different techniques. The most common injection types are subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intra-arterial, and intra-articular. Typical injection sites include the hand, upper arm, abdomen, elbow crease, and buttocks.

Subcutaneous injections are often used for administering insulin or certain infusion therapies. To ensure correct depth, the physician typically forms a skin fold before inserting the needle.

The intramuscular injection is commonly used for vaccinations and for administering many drugs that benefit from slower, sustained absorption compared to intravenous delivery.

Intravenous injections are used less frequently, as the immediate onset of action is not always desired and the depot effect of intramuscular administration is often preferred. However, intravenous infusion remains the method of choice for nearly all infusion therapies, including volume replacement, parenteral nutrition, and medication infusions.

Depending on the injection site and purpose, different needle types such as blunt needles, butterfly needles, IV cannulas, or standard injection needles are used. Praxisdienst offers all common needle types in various sizes at competitive prices.

Safe Injections and Needlestick Injury Prevention

Most needle types are now available as safety needles. These feature a built-in safety mechanism that activates once the needle is withdrawn from the skin. Some designs use a safety clip that covers the needle, while others retract it into the housing. In both cases, the user is fully protected against needlestick injuries after activation. Praxisdienst also offers sharps disposal containers for the safe disposal of used needles.
