Infusion Sets for Hospitals and Medical Practices
An infusion set (also called an infusion system or infusion device) is used to connect the infusion solution in the container directly to the patient’s access point. It allows fluids or medical solutions to be administered, typically intravenously or subcutaneously. A standard infusion set consists of a spike, drip chamber, infusion tubing with flow regulator, and a connector to attach the system to the cannula.
Infusion Sets for Gravity and Pressure Infusions
Infusions can be administered either as a gravity infusion or a pressure infusion. For gravity infusions, it is important to maintain an adequate height difference between the patient’s arm and the hanging infusion container. The bag is typically attached to an infusion stand, and the infusion set is connected using the infusion tubing or line.
A highly suitable infusion set for gravity infusions is the Infusion Device with Flow Regulator from Asid Bonz. The flow regulator allows for precise dosing of the solution, with a variable drip rate adjustable from 5 ml/h to 250 ml/h.
For flexible administration of infusions, infusion systems suitable for both gravity and pressure infusions are often used. A particularly popular option is the Intrafix Air P Infusion Set. The Intrafix Air P features a sharp spike for easy insertion into the infusion bag. Additionally, it has a bacteria-tight vent and can withstand pressures up to 2 bar. Being both DEHP-free and latex-free, it is safe for use with most patients.
Another highly suitable infusion device is the Primeline Comfort from B. Braun. Its vent includes a 15 µm filter for bacterial protection and can be closed with a green Euro cap. A free-standing, extended drip chamber ensures consistent drop formation in the Intrafix Primeline. Additionally, the 180 cm tubing length allows for a comfortable connection between the cannula and the infusion container.
Preventing Air Embolism / Administering Light-Sensitive Medications
To reliably prevent air embolisms, infusion devices with a safety float valve, such as the Dosifix Infusion Device, are highly suitable. This infusion system also allows extremely precise dosing – even below the milliliter range – thanks to its 150 ml dosing chamber and precision microdrip chamber.
For the administration of light-sensitive medications, the Intrafix SafeSet is ideal. This orange-transparent infusion set protects the medication from light within the 290–520 nm range. Compared to fully opaque systems, it also allows early detection of air bubbles, enhancing patient safety.
