Infusion Solutions for Medical Use
Infusions are used in healthcare for various purposes. They often serve as a carrier medium to administer medications intravenously or subcutaneously to patients.
In cases of moderate blood loss or insufficient water intake, infusions are used as volume therapy to restore plasma volume.
Depending on the indication, different solutions are administered, varying in their composition of minerals, salts, and glucose.
Infusion Solutions at Praxisdienst
One of the most widely used fluids for infusion therapy is isotonic saline solution (NaCl), which has the same osmotic pressure as human blood. It serves as a carrier medium for the intravenous and subcutaneous administration of medications via infusion. In addition, isotonic saline solution is commonly used for flushing venous access points and wounds.
At Praxisdienst, you can find the Isotonic Saline Solution from B. Braun. This solution comes in ecoflac Plus PE bottles and is available in various sizes, with either 500 ml or 1000 ml content. The environmentally friendly B. Braun Ecoflac bottle can be attached to all standard infusion stands.
The Ringer’s solution is also a staple in daily medical practice due to its versatile applications. It contains electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and calcium chloride) similar to human blood plasma, but with a higher chloride ion content.
In our shop, you will find the Ringer’s Solution Fresenius Kabi available in freeflex bags or as Kabi Packs of 500 ml. It is frequently administered as an infusion to patients with low blood volume and is also used for wound cleansing.
In addition to the conventional Ringer infusion solution, this category also includes Ringer-Acetate and Ringer-Lactate in 500 ml PE bottles. Due to the presence of acetate or lactate anions, these solutions have a lower chloride content while maintaining a similar electrolyte composition to human blood plasma.
Another classic infusion solution is glucose solution. For example, the Glucose 5 % Solution from Serumwerk Bernburg can also serve as a carrier for compatible electrolyte concentrates and medications. However, it is primarily administered as an infusion for parenteral nutrition or in cases of hypoglycemia, as 500 ml of this hypotonic infusion solution provides an energy content of 850 kJ/l (200 kcal/l).
Following significant blood loss, doctors often use colloidal infusion solutions. These help stabilise and increase the volume within blood vessels during infusion therapy. It contains 40 g of gelatine polysuccinate and is ideal as a colloidal alternative to HES-containing infusion solutions.
