Frequently Asked Questions About Infusion Solutions
A saline solution contains only sodium chloride dissolved in water, whereas a balanced electrolyte solution contains several electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in concentrations similar to blood plasma. Balanced electrolyte solutions are therefore better suited for balanced fluid therapy, while isotonic saline is mainly used as a carrier solution, for flushing, and for fluid replacement.
These terms describe the osmotic pressure of a solution in relation to blood plasma. An isotonic solution has the same osmotic pressure as blood, a hypotonic solution has a lower pressure, and a hypertonic solution has a higher pressure. Tonicity determines how the administered fluid is distributed among the body's fluid compartments.
Crystalloid solutions contain small molecules such as electrolytes or glucose and distribute rapidly throughout the extracellular space. Colloid solutions contain large molecules that remain in the vascular system for longer, providing a more prolonged volume-expanding effect. Crystalloids are widely used for basic fluid therapy, while colloids may be used to compensate for significant volume losses.

Broadly speaking, they can be divided into crystalloid and colloid solutions. The most appropriate choice depends on the clinical indication and the intended therapeutic effect.
