IV Catheters & Mandrins for Infusion Therapy
The peripheral venous catheter, also known as a venous cannula or indwelling catheter, is designed for longer-term venous access, such as during infusion therapy. It consists of a metal needle surrounded by a plastic catheter (e.g., FEP or PU). During insertion, the metal needle is withdrawn, leaving the flexible plastic catheter in the vein for extended use, often several days. After pausing an injection or infusion, the venous catheter can be safely sealed with a suitable mandrin.
Compatible infusion solutions, infusion stands, and additional accessories are available in the Infusion & Injection category.
Standard & Safety Peripheral Venous Catheters
One of the most popular choices for venous access is the Vasofix Cannula from B. Braun. Its atraumatic needle tip with 3-facet bevel geometry ensures excellent puncture properties, while the FEP catheter allows for gentle placement that preserves the vein. The cannula also features four embedded radiopaque stripes for easy visibility on X-rays. Additionally, the Braun cannula comes with a Luer-Lock connection and an integrated injection port for intravenous administration of medication when needed. It is available individually in packaging.
For added safety, consider the B. Braun Vasofix Safety Cannula. This safety cannula features a Safety-Clip that secures the needle tip immediately after withdrawal, effectively preventing needle-stick injuries. The safety cannula is completely PVC-free and includes an injection port along with a hydrophobic blood trap plug that makes the initial blood flash easily visible during puncture.
Mandrin for Closing the Catheter Lumen
A mandrin is inserted into the cannula after an infusion to keep the catheter open and prevent blockage of the vein by blood clots. This allows the access to be reused at a later time.
For securely closing both the standard and Safety Braun cannulas, we offer the matching Vasofix Mandrin from B. Braun Melsungen AG at a great price. The mandrin is colour-coded in different sizes (e.g., pink, green, grey, and blue) and consists of a thin plastic rod attached to a closure cap. A secure Luer-Lock connection between the mandrin and cannula reliably prevents air entry. The B. Braun mandrin is available individually per package, allowing you to purchase exactly what you need.
