The Winged Infusion Set – Simple and Practical in Use
A winged needle - or butterfly needle is a sterile, disposable needle that stands out thanks to its special butterfly-shaped design. The venipuncture device consists of a thin needle that is generally made from chrome-nickel steel, a pair of flexible butterfly-shaped wings and flexible tubing with a Luer adaptor. The cannula is particularly advantageous when used for phlebotomy, as the tubes for blood collecting are not attached to the cannula itself, but rather at the end of the tubing, which is usually approx. 30 cm long. This allows the needle to remain stable in the vein during tube changes, keeping the user’s hands free and preventing the needle from dislodging.
When applying the needle, the butterfly wings can be pushed together to allow for secure handling and guiding. As soon as the needle has entered the vein, the butterfly wings are secured to the patient's skin with help of adhesive tape. As a result, the device is guaranteed to stay in the correct position during phlebotomy procedures and the administration of medication and infusions, and reducing the risk of puncturing the vein wall.
Administrating Infusions with Butterfly Needles
The butterfly is ideal for infusions that don't need to be administered daily or several times a day. As it is easy to place and secure, the needle is perfect for short-term medication administration. The butterfly needle is a great alternative to standard IV cannulas, particularly in adult patients with thin veins, children and elderly patients, as it is available in very small sizes, is easy to apply and much shorter than e.g. the Vasofix Braunüle. Most butterfly needles are inclined to facilitate punctures at a shallow angle.
Safety Needles to Prevent Needlestick Injuries
In addition to standard butterfly cannulas, e.g., the Teqler Butterfly Needle, we offer safety venipuncture needles to prevent needlestick injuries. These safety cannulas are equipped with a built-in safety mechanism, which can be activated after puncture. Once activated, the safety shield cannot be disengaged and the needle remains irreversibly enclosed. As a result, there is no risk of the needle being accidentally reused, nor of medical staff accidentally pricking themselves on the used needle.
Multifly Blood Collection Cannulas
The Multifly is a specialised cannula designed exclusively for blood collection using the Sarstedt Monovette system. At the end of its kink-resistant tubing, there is an adapter that allows collection tubes to be attached directly. In addition to the standard Multifly cannula, there is also the Safety-Multifly, equipped with a mechanism that prevents needle-stick injuries, offering enhanced safety for healthcare professionals.
Painless Punctures with Butterfly Needles
Butterfly needles have a special precision bevel and a thin silicone coating to guarantee minimal puncture trauma, making venipuncture procedures a fairly painless process. For this reason, butterfly needles are especially suitable for use in paediatrics.
Venipuncture & Butterfly Needles at Affordable Prices
In the Praxisdienst online shop, you’ll find a wide selection of venipuncture needles in various designs. Popular choices include the Venofix perfusion set from B. Braun and the winged infusion set (butterfly needle) from Teqler. All winged cannulas available from us feature colour-coded sizing for quick and easy identification. Most venipuncture products are equipped with a high-quality chromium-nickel steel needle and a micro-siliconised precision tip for smooth, low-trauma insertion.
