Sampling Utensils for Collecting Sample Material

A sampling utensil is a medical product that is used to collect material for examination (e.g. endogenous cells or bacteria) from the surface of wounds or mucous membrane. Sampling utensils are applied in many branches of medicine, such as gynaecology, surgery or in ear, nose and throat practices. When it comes to sampling utensils, one can differentiate between sample swabs, cervical brushes, and Ayre spatulas.

Sampling Utensils for Cytological & Microbiological Smears

While sampling utensils used for cytological smears may also be non-sterile, it is absolutely necessary for sampling utensils used for microbiological smears to be sterile, as it could otherwise lead to an inaccurate examination result. Microbiological smears are most often carried out with the help of sample swabs, since they would not cause injury or disturbance to the tissue.
