In hospitals and surgeries, wooden tongue depressors are used to examine the mouth and throat of patients. They are usually made of wood or plastic, but some models are made from sterilisable stainless steel.
Tongue depressors are available in sterile or non-sterile versions and are designed not to cause injury to the patient in the sensitive oral cavity. That is why all edges are thoroughly rounded.
