Monitors for reliable Blood Glucose Measurement
The blood sugar monitor is used to check the blood glucose level, e.g. in patients with diabetes mellitus. The monitor and the suitable blood glucose test strips are used with arterial, venous or capillary blood to measure the glucose portion (mostly in mmol/L or mg/dL) and show the results on the display. Furthermore, blood glucose monitors can be used during screenings. In addition to the uncomplicated, hygienic measurement, low sample volume and measurement time, the meters stand out due to their high measurement accuracy. Different Types of Blood Glucose Meters
Today, there is a wide range of devices from various manufacturers. The models differ not only in their design but also in their functions. Depending on the configuration, devices are suitable for different patient groups and their individual needs.
- Integrated lancing devices & test cassettes: For mobile use, devices with an integrated lancing device and test cassette have proven particularly practical. For example, with the Accu-Chek Mobile, the lancing device remains in place during measurement. Used lancets are collected in the drum and disposed of safely, eliminating any risk of infection. The test cassette also supports hygienic handling, as there is no need to dispose of contaminated test strips manually.
- Illuminated and extra-large symbols: Many elderly patients require regular blood glucose monitoring with high accuracy. Some devices, such as the Beurer GL44, feature an illuminated test strip slot and a well-lit, easy-to-read display with extra-large symbols. Measurement Units of Blood Glucose Meters
Depending on the device, blood glucose readings are displayed in different units. While the millimoles per litre (mmol/l) unit is used internationally, milligrams per decilitre (mg/dl) is only used in certain regions.
Some devices, such as the Accu-Chek Instant Blood Glucose Meter from Roche Diabetes Care, are available in both mg/dl and mmol/l depending on user preference.
