Medical Application of Centrifuges in Laboratories
Centrifuges are an important part of medical labs and surgeries, but also in the field of research. They are used to separate substances of different densities from each other. For example, benchtop centrifuges can be used to separate blood cells such as erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes from blood serum. This allows the resulting product to be analysed more precisely and reliably.
But centrifugation also plays an important role in the examination of urine samples. However, since erythrocytes and leukocytes in urine can be destroyed more quickly by high speeds, it is important that the samples are centrifuged more gently. The speed and duration of centrifugation for each laboratory test depends on the substance to be evaluated.
Different Rotor Types of Laboratory Centrifuges
Since the separation occurs in the centre of the sample tube, the individual components are clearly visible and remain stably separated. In our online shop, you will find high-quality products such as the iFuge L400P 16 x 15 ml Swing-Out Rotor (PRP), which is even suitable for producing PRP (platelet-rich plasma).
Practical Features of Benchtop Centrifuges
Laboratory samples are stored in a variety of tubes and containers, so it is advantageous if a centrifuge comes with adapters for different lab vessels. For example, the iFuge D06 Microcentrifuge from Neuation Technologies is designed for 15 ml tubes as standard. To centrifuge samples in smaller containers, the delivery includes additional adapters for 5 & 7 ml and 1.5 & 2 ml tubes, which can be easily inserted and used. This ensures that all clinical samples can be processed and analysed efficiently.
When loading the centrifuge, it is important that the sample tubes are balanced symmetrically to reduce the risk of imbalance during high-speed rotation. Many of our benchtop centrifuges also feature an imbalance detection system. For instance, the Hettich Hematocrit Centrifuge automatically stops if an imbalance occurs. Hettich centrifuges are especially popular in our range due to their precision and reliable performance.
