Hydrogen breath testers measure the hydrogen (H2) concentration in a patient's exhaled breath and provides detection of intolerances, such as lactose, fructose or sucrose intolerance. A bacterial miscolonisation in the small intestine can also be determined with an hydrogen breath test.

The Hydrogen Breath Test is Painless & Cost Effective

The hydrogen breath test with a hydrogen breath tester is painless and is typically very well tolerated by the patient. Thanks to the simple and cost-effective test procedure, many doctors use the hydrogen breath test to detect a nutritional intolerance. 

 

A hydrogen breath test is based on the bacterial decomposition of the procedure collected sugar in the large intestine. Usually, there is only a small amount of sugar in the large intestine, as the large portion thereof is reabsorbed in the small intestine, in healthy people.

 

Bacteria decomposes in the large intestine and releases hydrogen. The hydrogen passes to the blood in the lungs where it is expelled. The exhaled hydrogen can be measured with the help of a hydrogen breath tester.

 

Should the value be over a certain limit, then there is an intolerance of the collected sugar present e.g. lactose or fructose.
