Lactate Meters to Measure the Blood Lactate Level
A portable lactate meter provides an immediate determination of the lactate value in blood, which is a measurement that is especially important for performance athletes. In regards to sports medicine and anerobic exercise, there are two main reasons to measure the lactate increase in a blood sample:
1) The obtained result can provide insight into the functionality of the circulatory system when training, in regards to moving oxygen to the muscles.
2) The results can also help determine how well the exercised muscles are utilising the oxygen they are receiving. Other reasons for monitoring blood lactate include its relation to liver disease or tissue hypoxia. However, issues concerning the liver or tissue require much more thorough examinations and the result of a blood lactate test is only one part of the diagnosis.
A lactate measurement can be carried out within only a few minutes using an analyser and compatible test strips. Briefly explained, a small blood sample (capillary or whole blood, depending on the device) is taken from the finger tip or earlobe and then placed on the strip. The sample is then inserted into the portable device, which usually produces a reading within approximately 15-60 seconds, depending on the meter.
While the test results are not enough to establish a diagnosis, they do help the practitioner narrow down the patient's possible conditions. Once the diagnosis is established, regular monitoring is often necessary to assure that the condition does not worsen. Monitoring is also necessary for patients with lactic acidosis, as a consistently decreasing value indicates that the treatment is working. In our online shop, we supply you with high-quality analysers and compatible accessories for blood lactate testing that can be used in both, clinical and sports medicine.
