Microscopes provide a magnified view of objects, such as plant elements, microorganisms, tissues or other biological samples. The objective lens relays a real image of the object to the eyepiece. In medicine, microscopes are used, for example, in gynaecology or haematology to examine blood cells and tissue cells. Compound microscopes magnify up to about 1000x and generally have halogen, LED or fluorescent illumination, depending on needs and preferences.

The microscope most often used in surgeries, schools and small laboratories is the optical microscope, often referred to as a light microscope. A basic distinction can be made between reflected and transmitted light microscopes. With a reflected light microscope the object is illuminated from above allowing the surface of opaque objects to be viewed more closely. With a transmitted light microscope the object is illuminated from below which is particularly important when viewing completely or partially translucent objects.
