Bunsen Burners & Butane

In medical laboratories, Bunsen burners are among the essential devices that should never be missing. The flame of a standard Bunsen burner reaches high temperatures of 350 to 1,000 degrees Celsius, making it ideal for flaming and sterilising medical instruments, as well as for experiments requiring the heating of samples and liquids. Due to these extremely high temperatures, gas burners are suitable for aseptic work, as the area around the open flame is effectively sterile. Models such as the Labogaz Bunsen burner by Hecht Karl can even reach flame temperatures of up to 1,100 °C, supporting more efficient working processes.

As a rule, Bunsen burners operate on gas. Laboratory Bunsen burners are therefore used with practical gas cartridges filled with butane or propane. The butane gas cartridges from Hecht Karl, with a filling weight of 190 g, offer a burning time of up to 3.5 hours and are particularly economical.

Bunsen burners come with a stable base, which increases their stability and, consequently, the safety in medical and chemical research laboratories. Attached to the base is a vertical burner tube, equipped with two separate valves that allow you to regulate both the oxygen and gas supply.

By opening the safety valve of the gas supply, the gas rises to the top of the burner tube and can be ignited there. The size and temperature of the adjustable flame depend on the amount of gas and oxygen supplied, allowing it to be individually controlled.

The more gas that is supplied, the larger the luminous flame becomes. If only a small amount of air is added, a reddish-yellow, flickering, and silent “economy” flame appears. With the air supply fully open, a blue, steady, and roaring flame forms, reaching the highest temperature.
