Historically, scalpels were usually one-piece instruments that were cleaned, sterilised, and reused after each procedure. Today, two-part scalpels are more common, consisting of a disposable blade and a sterilizable handle. Reusable Scalpels & Scalpel Blades

Using reusable handles with single-use scalpel blades is both a cost-saving and environmentally friendly option. While the individually sterile packed scalpel blades are disposed of after the surgical procedure to avoid cross-contamination, the handles can be cleaned and sterilised.

The handles fit different blade shapes depending on the design. The blade shape used depends on the tissue being cut during the procedure.

Figure 10 Sterile Disposable Scalpel Blades are the most common blade shape. They have a large, curved cutting edge that is perfect for cutting through skin and muscle tissue. Figure 11 scalpel blades, on the other hand, are triangular, long and tapered. They are often used for difficult cuts that need to be made precisely.

Surgical scalpels that are disposed of whole after use reduce the risk of injury and infection for staff in hospitals and doctors' surgeries. Disposable scalpels come in various designs, differing not only in the shape of their blade but also in the safety mechanism.
