A cautery device is a surgical instrument used to destroy or cut tissue using heat generated by an electrical current. Depending on the design, the working end features a fine wire loop or cautery tip that is heated by an electrical current to enable precise tissue treatment.

Different types of cautery devices are available for professional medical use. Applications of Cautery Devices

Cauterisation is used in various surgical applications, including haemostasis by sealing blood vessels and the targeted removal of tissue such as warts or other growths. Cautery should be avoided when the treated tissue needs to undergo histopathological examination, as heat generated during the procedure can cause tissue damage at the treatment margins and may make subsequent assessment more difficult.

When using electrocautery, the intensity and duration of the electrical current determine the effect on the tissue. Depending on the settings and application, the tissue in contact with the electrode can be divided or vaporised.

Cautery devices can be used for a range of procedures, including the treatment of small incisions, resections and tissue depressions. Other applications include opening painful subungual haematomas and use during ophthalmic procedures.
