Cryotherapy for the Surgical Freezing of Targeted Tissue
Cryosurgery is a therapeutic procedure used in dermatology to target abnormal tissue (e.g. to remove warts, fibromas or liver spots) with help of extremely low temperatures. The temperatures reached during treatment lie between -70°C and -200°C.
The cold not only has an anti-inflammatory effect and destroys cell organelles, it also destroys the cell membrane and stops metabolic processes. As a result, cyrotherapy treatments are particularly useful when treating cancer. As the cancer cells contain a lot of water, they are extremely sensitive to cold. The therapy's duration depends on the cell carcinoma's size and location. It is, however, not necessary to anaesthetize the patient, as the surgery isn't painful.
In addition, you can choose between different forms of cryosurgery equipment. To treat squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas and other forms of skin cancer, dermatologists can either use spray or contact methods.
Contact Methods
As an alternative to freezing sprays, dermatologists can use the contact method to treat skin conditions. This can either be done with a cooled metal probe or a needle like applicator filled with liquid nitrogen or argon gas.
There are two different systems with interchangeable applicators of various sizes.
The advantage of this cryotherapy treatment procedure is that a particularly targeted treatment is possible while the probability of injury to surrounding, healthy skin due to the extreme cold remains relatively low.
However, the penetration depth into the tissue is also significantly lower than with the use of a cyropen.
The Many Uses of Cryotherapy
Dermatologists make use of cryosurgery for almost every superficial skin condition, from warts to benign lesions to cancer treatments. As the freezing therapy is ambulatory, it can be performed within seconds. As cryosurgery treatments generally don't need more than one session, they are especially popular with patients. Another advantage they present is the low degree of scar formation.
Examples for Cryosurgery
- Actinic keratosis
- Fibroma
- Warts
- Seborrheic keratosis
- Hypertrophic scars
