Instrument disinfection is an important element in the reprocessing of reusable instruments. This calls for modern instrument disinfectants that are characterised by excellent cleaning properties, a wide spectrum of efficacy and optimal material compatibility.

Manual Cleaning and Disinfection

By cleaning and disinfecting instruments, contaminations and germs are both removed which is much safer for the dental staff. As a rule, manual instrument disinfection is done in a bath and most often with a special instrument basin. This cleans the instruments of any coarse organic substances. Instruments that can be taken apart should be, but it is important to exercise caution when doing so. After cleaning, the instruments are placed in a disinfectant bath where it is important to ensure that the insides and outsides of the instruments are covered. When doing so, it is also important to regard the manufacturer's notes regarding material compatibility. Once the activation period has passed, the instruments can be mechanically cleaned and remaining residue removed.

Alternatively, cleaning can also be done with an ultrasonic cleaner. Now, chemical disinfection is carried out with a bactericidal and virucidal instrument disinfectant. When finished, the instruments are rinsed off under flowing water and then dried. After visually verifying that there is no remaining residue on the instruments, the next stage of reprocessing can ensue in an autoclave, for example.

Disinfectant Solutions for Rotary Instruments

Special instrument disinfectant is used for disinfecting rotary instruments. These disinfectants are particularly compatible with most materials and dissolve stubborn build-ups and residue. Because most drill disinfectants are suited for use in an ultrasonic cleaner, disinfection and cleaning of rotary instruments can in fact be done in an ultrasonic cleaner. After the cleaning process, the rotary instruments are thoroughly rinsed or cleared of remaining residue with a drill brush and then the reprocessing process can continue.

Since most bur disinfectants, such as rotasept® by schülke, are suitable for use in an ultrasonic cleaning device, the disinfection and cleaning of rotary instruments can be carried out in the ultrasonic cleaner.

After the cleaning process, the rotary instruments are thoroughly rinsed and, if necessary, freed from remaining debris using a bur brush, and then passed on to further reprocessing steps, for example in the autoclaves.

Safely Disinfect Moulds

Even moulds and technical dental tools must be disinfected to prevent germ transmigration. Recent impressions, for example, are lain in a disinfectant solution that is made for moulds, after being thoroughly cleaned. Even in this case, it should be necessary to completely cover the impression with the disinfectant solution. Once the period of efficacy is over, the mould is rinsed off with flowing water and prepared for the next use e.g. in the dental lab. Based on the good material compatibility, these disinfectant solutions are also suited for disinfecting prosthetic tools and other dental devices.
