Dental Base Materials – Foundation for Restorative Fillings

Fillings become necessary when a tooth is damaged by caries but is still worth preserving. With a proper filling, the dentist can halt the progression of decay and save the tooth. Once the cavity is prepared and all decayed tissue has been removed, a base material can be applied. This layer protects the dental pulp from painful stimuli and acts as an insulating barrier between the filling material and the nerve.

 

For deep cavities, metallic fillings, or old amalgam restorations that conduct temperature well, it is recommended to always apply a base material before placing the new filling. The final restoration can then be placed using a variety of materials, ranging from plastic composites to rigid ceramic restorations. Antibacterial & Radiopaque

A classic example is the Life Regular by Kerr Hawe. This two-component base material consists of a base and catalyst, mixed manually in equal parts. Life Regular is easy to apply directly into the cavity, is radiopaque, and promotes the formation of secondary dentin. Additionally, it serves as a reliable base for restorations, including composite and amalgam fillings.

 

Direct and Indirect Pulp Capping

When decay has reached deep into the tooth and the pulp is exposed or only partially protected, a pulp capping procedure is usually performed. Various materials are available for direct or indirect pulp capping to protect the pulp and support healing.

Harvard BioCal-Cap is a bioactive, light-curing MTA cement for direct and indirect pulp capping. With its high pH and excellent calcium release, it promotes the formation of tertiary dentin and hydroxyapatite. The material is moisture-tolerant, radiopaque, and suitable for both primary and permanent teeth. Application of the resin-modified MTA cement is done directly from the syringe, allowing for precise, targeted placement in the cavity. Its high alkaline pH creates an antibacterial environment that protects the tooth from hypersensitivity. Even posterior molars are easily accessible, making treatment convenient for both dentist and patient.

 

If you are looking for alternative base materials, products from Hoffman Dental are an excellent choice. For example, Pulpine NE features a eugenol-free formula with propolis and zinc oxide and can be mixed individually.
