How is a Biopsy Fixed?
A biopsy is fixed with formaldehyde or formalin to prevent autolytic changes. Samples should be placed immediately after collection into 10% buffered formalin.

Formaldehyde is a colourless, water-soluble gas with a pungent odor. Formalin is a liquid solution of formaldehyde in water. A saturated solution contains about 37% formaldehyde by weight.

Formaldehyde was classified as a category 1B carcinogen in 2014. This classification came into effect under EU Regulation (No. 605/2014).
