Gauze and Conforming Bandages for Protective, Pressure and Medicated Wraps
The use of gauze and conforming bandages on an animal conforms to the required type of treatment and covers a wide range of applications. Gauze bandages and conforming bandages are available with various specifications, such as open, with a cut edge, elastic and non-elastic, made of cotton or cellulose, even polyamid or viscous. They find diverse application in veterinary medicine and are individually selected based on the requirements.
Gauze Bandages for Animal Wraps
Gauze bandages are the ideal dressing material for properly securing wound dressings and applying ointment or pressure bandages to animals. When using elastic bandages, care should be taken—unless required for pressure bandages—not to wrap them too tightly, in order to avoid pressure sores.
Elastic gauze bandages are particularly suitable for bandaging around joints, as they restrict movement less than non-elastic materials. They conform to the body’s contours and, thanks to their breathable properties, provide adequate airflow.
Cohesive bandages offer the advantage of being self-adhesive, so they do not need additional fastening like traditional gauze. The Cohesive Fixation Bandage from Génia, elastic and self-adhesive, is available in various colours and sizes. No scissors are needed—the material can be easily torn by hand.
Protective Wraps for Animals
Protective wraps are applied to protect abrasions, lacerations or surgical wounds. This promotes the healing process in the wound, as inflammation resulting from pathogens can be prevented. Animals that often gnaw on wraps must also wear a neck cone (Elizabethan collar) so that they do not destroy the dressing materials. A paw wrap is considered one of the protective wraps used in veterinary medicine.
Pressure Wraps in Veterinary Medicine
For heavily bleeding injuries, a pressure bandage is used to compress blood vessels. In such cases, a sterile wound dressing should always be used to minimise the risk of inflammation in the injured tissue.
Additionally, a thick layer of gauze is firmly wrapped with an elastic bandage. However, due to its strong compressive effect, the bandage should be removed after no more than one day to avoid impairing blood circulation.
The Uniflex Ideal Bandage from BSN Medical is particularly suitable for compressive bandages during initial and follow-up care. It is a permanently elastic ideal bandage used for supportive and fixing dressings. The Uniflex Ideal combines the benefits of an ideal bandage with the quality of textured polyamide fibres. The synthetic fibre content prevents material fatigue.
Medicated Wrap
To ensure that topical medications such as ointments and tinctures are not licked off by the animal and can achieve a long-lasting effect, medicated bandages are applied.
Additionally, this prevents soiling of the home environment with ointment residues. This type of bandage is commonly used, for example, for inflammatory swelling in the limbs.
Another effective method is the pour-on bandage. Here, cotton wool is soaked in a solution, such as Rivanol, until fully saturated.
It is then secured to the affected limb of the animal with gauze bandages. The soaking of the bandage can be repeated as needed by pouring additional solution onto the bandage from above.
The self-adhesive fixation bandage from Teqler is an elastic bandage specially designed for veterinary use. It is cohesive and slip-resistant, does not stick to skin or hair, and adheres even when wet.
