Sharps Containers Protect Against Needlestick Injuries

Sharps containers, also known as needle disposal containers or safety containers, are made from puncture-resistant plastic and are equipped with a special closure that cannot be reopened once sealed. Used needles, scalpels, lancets and single-use instruments are disposed of directly after use in a sharps container.

The sharps disposal container can be filled up to the marked line, after which it is irreversibly sealed. Because sharps containers cannot be reopened after disposal and are made from puncture-resistant material, they reliably protect both veterinary staff and waste management personnel from needlestick injuries.

Sharps Disposal Containers in Various Sizes

Depending on where sharps containers are used and which items are mainly to be disposed of, sharps collectors are available in various sizes.

For equipping doctor’s bags and emergency cases, small sharps containers with a volume of 200 to 300 ml are most commonly used, as they take up very little space and are ideal for the disposal of standard needles.

The standard disposal containers for veterinary practices and animal clinics usually have a volume between 600 ml and 5 litres. For the disposal of single-use instruments, there are special disposal containers whose insertion slot is specifically designed for instrument disposal.

For facilities with a particularly high volume of needles, syringes and other sharp or pointed consumables, XXL disposal boxes (such as the Sharpsafe sharps container by Dahlhausen – which enables the safe disposal of hospital waste) are available. Their volume starts at 30 litres and upwards.

Sharps Containers in High-Visibility Colours

To ensure that the container for sharp objects is easily noticeable, they are traditionally manufactured in emergency colours such as yellow and red. The container is usually yellow, while the lid is marked with a strong red colour.
