Castration of Small and Large Animals

The routine tasks of veterinarians include the castration of various animal species. Castrations of both male and female animals are performed in large and small animal clinics to control the animal population and prevent undesirable behaviour like urine marking in cats.

Castration of Farm Animals

In the castration of cattle, sheep, and other livestock, two different methods are distinguished: . The latter is the most common method, as it does not require disinfection or anaesthesia.

Using a Burdizzo clamp, the spermatic cords are crushed one at a time for approximately one minute each. To improve the success of the castration, it is recommended to crush each spermatic cord in two different locations.

In addition to proper restraint of the animal, sedation is usually sufficient, and in older animals, a sacral epidural anaesthesia may be administered. Similar to the Génia Castration Clamp, it is used for bloodless castration in various animal species.

Depending on the size, the Burdizzo clamp is suitable for castrating sheep, calves, or cattle. The castration clamp is robustly constructed and designed for easy handling.

Castration of Female Cats

Spaying and neutering of cats is among the most common surgical procedures in veterinary practices and clinics. Beyond reproductive control, there are numerous other reasons to perform the procedure: increased life expectancy, elimination of oestrus behaviours, and a reduced risk of accidents due to decreased roaming behaviour.

Consequently, equipping every veterinary operating theatre with high-quality instruments and materials is crucial. An indispensable tool for feline ovariectomy is the spay hook, such as the Cat Spay Hook by Hauptner & Herberholz.

This instrument allows the uterine horn to be gently and securely exteriorised from the abdominal cavity, enabling precise ligature placement.

Thanks to its rounded design, the hook is also a useful tool for retracting soft tissues, such as the soft palate when examining for a suspected foreign body, without risk of injury.

You can purchase the high-quality, durable spay and neuter instruments for both large and small animals at attractive prices from Praxisdienst. If you have any questions about individual instruments, our customer service team is happy to advise you – via telephone, e-mail, or live chat.
