Drenching Livestock Using an Administration Syringe

Drenching refers to the administration of liquids or medications to farm animals such as sheep, pigs, or small ruminants – for example, during electrolyte treatments. The mouthpiece of drenchers is made of metal to withstand the chewing motions of the animals. Additionally, when used with a suitable catheter, uterine flushes can also be performed.

Drenching for Various Animals

Particularly practical for drenching is the self-filling version: it features an automatic self-filling syringe and a back-mounted container, allowing larger groups of animals to be conveniently supplied with medication.

The filling is easy and individually adjustable. An example is the HSW Drench-Matic with a 2.5-litre back-mounted container.

This model allows steplessly adjustable dosing and fatigue-free operation thanks to its ergonomic design.

As a manual option, we offer for example the Kerbl Administration Syringe with a 400 ml capacity. This robust syringe is suitable not only for administering liquid medications, but also – in combination with the catheter available as an accessory – for uterine flushing in cows.

Application for Calves

Position yourself parallel to the animal and at head height.
Secure its head between your hip and elbow.
Grasp the lower jaw and, with the other hand, insert the drench tube laterally into the corner of the mouth, through the diastema and over the base of the tongue.
If you want to administer the medication directly into the abomasum and bypass the rumen, apply it into the cheek pouch or onto the base of the tongue to trigger the pharyngeal reflex.
For administration into the rumen, slide the drench tube over the base of the tongue. Be careful to avoid delivering it into the trachea.
