Inhalation Devices for Respiratory Therapy in Veterinary Medicine
Respiratory diseases are very common in animals and are often only noticed after the symptoms become pronounced. In particular, cats, dogs, and horses are frequently affected by chronic lower respiratory tract conditions. The therapy depends on the type of disease, but often anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and bronchodilatory medications for inhalation are prescribed.
Ultrasonic & Compressor Inhalation, Metered Dose & Powder Inhalers
Since the side effects of medications administered via tablets or injections can be severe, veterinarians often use inhalation devices for animals, allowing the medications to be administered via inhalation. This ensures that the drugs act directly where they are needed: in the lungs.
In human medicine, various types of inhalation therapy are distinguished. One method is inhalation using an ultrasonic or compressor inhalation device, where the carrier solution (usually saline) with the added medication is turned into a fine mist.
There are also metered dose aerosols, where the medication is dissolved in a propellant, and powder inhalers, where finely ground or micronized medication is inhaled deeply into the lungs by the patient. The Witvet Inhaler by TooToo Meditech is suitable for aerosol treatment in cats. It is used with metered dose aerosols from human medicine and provides targeted treatment for various respiratory diseases.
Except for powder inhalation, all types of inhalation can also be performed in animals. For this purpose, there are special inhalation devices for animals or dedicated inhalation aids, which make it possible to carry out inhalation therapy in animals at all.
Inhalation Devices for Animals
If the medication is to be administered via a carrier solution (for example, saline) or if the inhalation is only intended to moisten the animal's airways, compressor or ultrasonic inhalation devices are used.
In veterinary medicine, inhalation devices from human medicine are often used for cost reasons. In these cases, inhalation usually does not take place using a mask, as is traditionally done; instead, the animal is placed in a transport box (such as the Eickemeyer Oxygen Therapy Cage), and the inhalation vapour is introduced into the box.
However, there are also inhalation devices specifically designed for use in animals, such as the Air-one Ultrasonic Inhalator for Horses.
This inhalation device is designed to ensure an effective and animal-friendly inhalation. In particular, the carefully designed breathing mask fits perfectly on the horse's nose and is, of course, available in various sizes.

Feline asthma is the most common respiratory disease in cats. Around 80,000 cats with asthma live in Germany alone. Although the condition is not curable, it can be effectively managed with medication.
It is crucial to administer the medication via inhalation—especially when using corticosteroids, as the side effects can be severe for cats. Long-term systemic administration can even lead to the development of diabetes.
Since a metered-dose inhaler is typically used to treat feline asthma, inhalation aids such as the AeroKat are employed.
For other respiratory conditions (such as a common cold), an inhalation device can also be used to loosen secretions or soothe irritated mucous membranes. In these cases, no medication is usually administered; a mild saline solution is typically used instead.
Inhalation in Dogs
One of the most common respiratory diseases in dogs – especially in small breeds at an advanced age – is chronic bronchitis. In dogs, necessary medications should also be administered via inhalation to avoid severe side effects.
With the AeroDawg aerosol spacer, metered-dose inhalers can be easily administered to dogs. Most dogs quickly get used to regular inhalation with the aid and tolerate the mask without problems.
For simple colds, dogs can also be treated using an inhalation device. For mild cold symptoms, inhaling saline solutions (sea salt) is recommended.
Of course, we also offer suitable replacement masks for the AeroKat/AeroDawg aerosol spacer. They are available in three sizes, allowing you to choose the right fit for your cat or dog.
Thanks to their special design, the mask prevents coat irritation and reliably seals the nose and mouth.
Inhalation in Horses
Horses are particularly susceptible to respiratory diseases – in particular, "heaves" is a condition feared by many horse owners. Treatment of horses suffering from respiratory issues is usually carried out via inhalation.
The inhalation device used depends on the medication to be administered (for example, Herbal liquid). If the medication is in the form of a metered-dose aerosol, it is delivered using an aerosol chamber.
For medications that are vaporized via a carrier solution, an ultrasonic device (such as the Air-one ultrasonic inhaler for horses with the Air-one warmblood inhalation mask) is required.
